First Universal SMART Cable Sensor System Deployed at Ocean Networks Canada

In February 2026, Subsea Data Systems announced that the first universal Science Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunications (SMART) Cable sensor system has been deployed and is transmitting real-time geophysical data. Installed at Ocean Networks Canada's NEPTUNE Observatory Cascadia node, this represents the first adaptable solution that works across all types of subsea telecom cables.

The universal design differentiates this system from other SMART Cable solutions, which are typically tailored to specific infrastructure with high capital expense and significant power consumption. The SDS system can be installed on repeatered telecommunications cables, unrepeatered cables, and purpose-built cable systems, enabling telecom owners, government agencies, and research facilities to leverage SMART Cable technology.

Dr. Matt Fouch, President of Subsea Data Systems, stated: "We've demonstrated that comprehensive ocean and cable monitoring can be integrated into telecommunications infrastructure at a fraction of the current cost and complexity. This opens the door to a global network of financially accessible, cable-based sensors that provide real-time data, potentially saving countless lives in vulnerable coastal communities worldwide".

The system includes Silicon Audio Seismic's Omnitilt switchable seismometer/accelerometer for high-frequency broadband seismic data, along with a Paroscientific absolute pressure transducer and Sea-Bird temperature recorder. The system is currently transmitting real-time data to the US National Science Foundation's National Geophysical Facility, with data to be publicly available via both data portals once commissioning is complete
