Autocar Introduces Smart Battery Cable to Enhance Fire Safety in Refuse Trucks
In February 2026, U.S. heavy-duty truck manufacturer Autocar unveiled its Smart Battery Cable, specifically designed for its ACX Series vehicles to mitigate electrical fire risks in refuse truck applications.
Refuse trucks operate in harsh environments where battery cables are constantly exposed to vibration, abrasion, and contaminants. Traditional unfused battery cables carry high current loads and can generate arcing if damaged, potentially leading to fires and equipment damage.
Key Technical Features:
The system enables early detection of potential cable damage and immediately alerts the operator through the Autocar Always Up display upon detecting a short circuit
Allows the vehicle to be safely pulled over, preventing overheating or fire
Incorporates a vehicle start interlock function, preventing engine restart until the vehicle has been inspected and repaired
This technology builds upon Autocar's existing safety systems, including integrated advanced driver assistance modules. The Smart Battery Cable is currently available on select ACX configurations, and the company plans to make it standard equipment across the entire ACX lineup by 2027.
