Sumitomo Electric Invests $100 Million in World's Largest Wiring Harness Facility in Egypt

Source:Industrial Automation / Time:2026-08-05

In May 2023, Sumitomo Electric Industries, a Japan-based manufacturer of automotive wiring systems, invested USD 100 million to establish the world's largest electrical wiring harness facility in Egypt .

Project Objectives:

  • Strengthen Sumitomo's global supply capabilities

  • Support the expanding automotive sector in Africa and Europe

  • Advance the production of next-generation wiring harnesses for electric and hybrid vehicles

Strategic Significance: The investment reflects the growing demand for automotive wiring harnesses driven by vehicle electrification and the increasing complexity of electrical systems in modern vehicles .

9. Aluminum vs. Copper: Technical Trade-Offs and Application Segmentation

While aluminum offers significant cost and weight advantages, copper maintains its dominance in certain applications due to superior electrical and mechanical properties .

Good (larger diameter, stiffer)

Application Segmentation:

  • High-voltage power transmission: Aluminum is rapidly gaining share due to weight and cost advantages — can achieve same current capacity with larger diameter while still saving 20–45% weight

  • Low-voltage signal transmission: Copper maintains its position due to superior stability and reliability for sensitive signals

  • Space-constrained areas: Copper's smaller diameter and better flexibility suit instrument panels and door harnesses

Industry experts believe the future will be copper-aluminum coexistence, with automakers choosing materials based on specific application requirements rather than a wholesale replacement .
