IEEE Research Demonstrates Multidimensional Submarine Cable Sensing

Source:Industrial Automation / Time:2026-08-13

A paper presented at the IEEE Conference in Los Angeles (March 2026) demonstrated the first integration of intensity-phase-frequency parameters on submarine communication cables, achieving multidimensional perception of fiber loss, temperature, ocean gravity waves, tides, earthquakes, typhoons, and vessel activities simultaneously .

The research highlights that submarine cables form the backbone of the global communication network, carrying over 99% of international data traffic. Distributed Optical Fiber Sensing (DOFS) provides continuous and high spatial resolution measurements, enabling large-scale environmental monitoring based on existing submarine cable infrastructure .

Previous studies have focused primarily on single-parameter vibration measurements based on Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), with limited attention to integrated, multi-parameter sensing of both cable characteristics and the surrounding ocean environment. This research represents a significant advancement in the field .
