Atlantic CAM SMART Cable Ring System Set for 2026 Deployment
The Atlantic CAM SMART Cable system, connecting Lisbon (the Continent), Azores, and Madeira in a 3,700 km ring, is scheduled for deployment in 2026, according to presentations at the CTBTO SnT2025 conference .
Scientific Integration:
SMART nodes will be incorporated along the cable path
Sensors will include temperature, pressure, and seismic motion capabilities
Data will support ocean heat content and circulation studies, sea level rise estimates, and global tsunami and earthquake warning networks
The system, presented by Dr. Bruce Howe (University of Hawaii at Manoa), represents one of two major SMART Cable pilot deployments scheduled for 2026, alongside the Tamtam system connecting Vanuatu and New Caledonia .
