Source:Industrial Automation / Time:2026-08-13

The installation of the new 35 km electro-optical cable off Catania will extend the operational life of the Western Ionian Sea (WIS) observatory by at least another 20 years .

Infrastructure Details:

  • Cable length: Approximately 35 km

  • Depth: 2,000 metres in the Western Ionian Sea

  • Optical fibres: 24

  • Management: Jointly by INGV and INFN (National Institute for Nuclear Physics)

  • European network: Part of EMSO ERIC (European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water column Observatory)

The cable's submarine termination has been designed to accommodate new observation systems, while a dedicated data management and distribution system will allow real-time access to the entire infrastructure. Enhanced connectivity will expand the observed area and foster the development of innovative and interdisciplinary experiments .

"Investing in these infrastructures means strengthening the country's ability to understand and monitor natural processes," said Fabio Florindo, President of INGV .
