GigE Vision Interface Overview: 100m Transmission and PoE Support

Source:Industrial Automation / Time:2026-08-13

GigE Vision is an interface standard that transmits image and control data from industrial cameras to host systems via standard Gigabit Ethernet, requiring no dedicated frame grabber hardware .

Key Technical Facts:

  • Transmission Distance: Up to 100 meters per cable segment using standard Cat5e or Cat6 cabling

  • Theoretical Throughput: 1,000 Mbit/s (125 MB/s) with typical sustained rates of 90–110 MB/s per camera

  • Power over Ethernet: Allows camera power delivery through the same cable

  • Network Infrastructure: Standard RJ45 connectors, switches, and Ethernet hardware

Protocol Architecture:
GigE Vision operates through two sub-protocols :

  • GVCP (Control Protocol): Manages device discovery, IP configuration, and camera parameter access

  • GVSP (Data Streaming Protocol): Handles image and measurement data transfer

The standard is maintained by the Association for Advancing Automation (A3). Version 2.0 (2011) added multi-camera synchronization and enhanced bandwidth support for higher-resolution sensors .
