Champagne Showers Banned After Swiss Nightclub Fire
Munich has banned champagne showers – the practice of shaking and spraying sparkling wine inside festival tents . The ban follows a tragic Swiss nightclub fire on New Year's Day that killed 41 people, caused by sparklers attached to champagne bottles lit indoors .
Sparkler Rule: Sparklers are still permitted but only on the festival's final evening . The city council also rejected a proposal to ban patio heaters .
Why the Ban:
Champagne showers considered "wasteful" and "out of character" with the traditional folk festival
Sparkler restrictions follow the deadly Crans-Montana fire
