For King's Day 2026, the Dutch royal family visited the Frisian town of Dokkum for the first time . The historic walled town of 13,000 residents expected tens of thousands of visitors for the occasion .

Royal Walkabout Highlights:

  • The tour started at 11am at the Bonifatiuskapel, named for the eighth-century missionary who died nearby in 754

  • Programme included a recreation of the 1986 Elfstedentocht – the year the king himself completed the eleven-cities tour under his student pseudonym WA van Buren

  • The royal family was greeted by Mayor Johannes Kramer and Friesland Commissioner Arno Brok

The visit to Friesland was significant, as the royal family had last visited the province during Queen Beatrix's reign in 2008, when they visited Makkum and Franeker .
