Olympic-Themed Costumes and Mock Torches in St. Mark's Square

Ahead of the official opening, masked revellers gathered in St. Mark's Square on January 31, many wearing Olympic-themed costumes and carrying mock torches . Some Italian revellers expressed their support for the national athletes, with one participant stating: "Of course, we're carrying the Olympic torch... it will bring luck to the Italian athletes. That's the only medal we want to see!" Others noted that "the Olympics represent the whole world, just as Carnival encompasses the whole world and the whole world loves the Venice Carnival."
