The "Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume" featured black and orange geometric patterns, a black hood, an exaggerated white smiling mouth, and black gloves. Critics noted that the product image, modeled by a Black child in a pose with one leg raised, mirrored historical photos of minstrel show performers .
Target's Response:
"We removed an offensive Halloween costume that should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer for sale. As a company, we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry," Target stated. "We know this is especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners" . The company is reviewing how the product was approved .
