Bali Restaurant Fire Sparks Balloon Ban at Venues
A devastating fire at Chez Gado Gado in Seminyak, Bali, on Sunday, August 30, 2026, has led to immediate bans on party balloons at venues across the island.
The Incident:
Witnesses claim a group was celebrating a birthday party when one of their balloons exploded into a "fireball." The fire completely destroyed the well-known restaurant, forcing diners to run for their lives. A West Australian teenager was among those injured and was rushed to hospital with burns to his face and arms.
Cause:
Hydrogen is often used to fill balloons in Bali as a cheaper alternative to helium. Hydrogen is highly flammable and can ignite extremely quickly if exposed to a flame, spark, or other ignition source.
Immediate Response:
Mataraz Villas announced balloons would be banned in its accommodation: "For the safety of our guests, staff and neighbouring properties, balloons are no longer permitted anywhere within Mataraz Villas. As we cannot verify which gas has been used, all gas-filled balloons and balloon decorations are prohibited from being brought into the villas."
The policy adjustment has been well-received online, with many hoping other venues will follow.
