Hengtong Cable Australia confirmed in March 2026 that it has secured the cable supply contract for Stage 3 of the Western Downs Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Queensland, Australia, continuing its deep involvement in the country's large-scale BESS development.

The Stage 3 expansion, located near Chinchilla, will add 305 MW / 1,220 MWh of capacity and is scheduled to be operational by 2027/28. Hengtong will supply the following cable packages to UGL, the project's main contractor:

  • 26 kilometers of 33 kV medium-voltage cables

  • 47 kilometers of 1 kV flexible cables

  • 16 kilometers of grounding power cables

These cables will be manufactured at Hengtong's facility in Jiangsu Province, China, demonstrating its global production and supply capabilities.

Project Background: The Western Downs Battery is being developed in multiple stages. Stage 1 (270 MW / 540 MWh) became operational in mid-2025, and Stage 2 (additional 270 MW / 540 MWh) is expected online in 2026. Upon full completion of all three stages, the total capacity will reach approximately 845 MW / 2.3 GWh. Hengtong previously delivered 70 kilometers of flexible low-voltage grounding cables and 33kV cables for Stage 2 of this project, as well as cable packages for Neoen's Muchea Battery project in Western Australia and other projects in New South Wales.
