Borealis Launches FR6012 Halogen-Free Sheathing Compound for High-Voltage Cables

Source:Industrial Automation / Time:2026-08-07

In April 2026, Borealis announced the commercial launch of FR6012, a new halogen-free flame-retardant monolayer sheathing compound for medium- to extra-high-voltage cables. Developed in close collaboration with NKT Portugal and other technology partners, the material meets stringent ST12 fire-performance standards .

Key Performance Highlights:

  • Enables cable designs achieving up to CPR Euroclass B2ca s1a, d0, a1 classification—signifying very limited contribution to fire, very low smoke, no flaming droplets, and very low acidity and corrosivity of decomposition gases

  • Aligned with IEC standards IEC 60502-2, IEC 60840, and IEC 62067, defining safety and performance requirements from 6 to 500 kV power cables

  • Approved for use in 45 kV, 90 kV, 132 kV, and 220 kV cable systems by major transmission system operators and private utilities across Europe

Additional Benefits:
The compound supports cost efficiency with excellent processability on standard jacketing lines, reducing production risks for cable producers and lowering maintenance needs for asset owners. Fire safety is becoming a defining performance requirement for next-generation power networks as the energy transition requires significant expansion of power networks, with more high-voltage cables being placed above ground and indoors in enclosed or high-occupancy areas .

Bart Verheule, Vice President Marketing at Borealis Energy, stated: "Fire safety is becoming a defining performance requirement for the next generation of power networks. With FR6012, we are giving our customers a material solution they can rely on as they expand and modernize critical infrastructure" .
