Advanced Optical Multi-Core Fibers: 8K Video Transmission and Data Center Applications

Source:Industrial Automation / Time:2026-08-15

The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan demonstrated the world's first implementation of a 4-core standard cladding diameter multi-core fiber transmission unit in a real system handling uncompressed 8K video .

Key Technical Achievements:

  • The cable contains a total of eight 4-core standard cladding diameter multi-core fibers within a 3 mm outer coating

  • Enables information transmission equivalent to that provided by 32 conventional optical fibers

  • Successfully transmitted high-volume video data from multiple 8K cameras over 300 meters through limited-capacity information conduits

Technical Innovations:

  • Multi-core fiber MUX/DEMUX: Uses a micro-optical coupling system with miniature lenses to connect each core to four single-mode fibers in a non-contact manner .

  • Low-loss coupling: Each single-mode fiber can be individually and optimally aligned to the corresponding core, resulting in extremely low coupling error .

  • High reliability: YAG laser welding secures components without adhesives, offering excellent power handling characteristics .

Application Impact:
The dramatic reduction in cable count (from 32 individual fibers to a single 3 mm cable) enables installation through existing, crowded conduits where additional cabling would otherwise be impossible . This technology is directly applicable to data centers and broadcast facilities requiring high-density optical interconnects.
