Source:Industrial Automation / Time:2026-08-15

Furukawa Electric announced in March 2026 the start of mass production of a 13,824-count multi-core optical fiber cable featuring one of the world's highest fiber densities, designed for hyperscale data centers supporting AI and cloud services .

Key Specifications:

Parameter

Rating

Fiber Count

13,824

Cable Diameter

Less than 40mm

Transmission Capacity

Double that of existing cables

Technology

Rollable ribbon (intermittent connection-type)

Connector Support

VSFF (Very Small Form Factor)

Key Features:

  • High density: Uses rollable ribbons that intermittently connect 16 thin fibers with 200μm diameter to increase fiber density .

  • VSFF connector support: Contributes to smaller, higher-density connections .

  • Indoor/outdoor capability: Enables GPU clusters connecting multiple data center buildings .

Production Capacity:

  • The No. 2 plant at Mie Works, specialized for ultra-high count multi-core optical fiber cable, commenced full-scale operations in February 2026 .

  • Production capacity has more than doubled compared to FY2023 .

  • The new cable is part of the Lightera brand, Furukawa Electric's global optical solutions business launched April 1, 2025 .

This development addresses the need for increased fiber density and transmission volu
