Target Apologizes and Pulls "Offensive" Halloween Clown Costume
Target faced widespread backlash and issued a formal apology after selling a children's Halloween costume that social media users compared to racist "blackface" imagery from the Jim Crow era .
The Controversy:
The "Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume" featured black and orange geometric patterns, a black hood, and an exaggerated white smiling mouth . Critics noted that the product image, modeled by a Black child in a pose with one leg raised, mirrored historical photos of minstrel show performers .
Target's Response:
"We know this is especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members, and partners. Removing the costume is an important first step, and the company is looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change to ensure this won't happen again," Target stated . The company confirmed the product is no longer for sale and is reviewing internal processes .
The incident comes nearly a year after Target scaled back its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, leading some to question whether the lack of diverse perspectives in the decision-making process contributed to the oversight .
