Finland Tests Subsea Cable Disruption Monitoring Technology
The Finnish Border Guard announced in June 2026 that it has tested new detection equipment in the Baltic Sea capable of identifying approaching dangers or risks to subsea cables. This follows a series of incidents in recent years where undersea data and power cables in the Baltic region were suspected to have been deliberately damaged by freighters.
The technology being tested is based on distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), in which a fiber-optic cable detects and measures abnormal vibrations on the seabed. This approach transforms existing undersea fiber infrastructure into a continuous monitoring system capable of detecting unusual activity along the cable route.
The most recent major incident occurred at the end of 2025, when authorities suspected the cargo ship Fitburg of involvement in deliberately damaging an underwater communications cable on New Year's Eve. The Border Guard's testing initiative reflects growing concern among Baltic Sea nations about the security of critical subsea infrastructure and the potential for using sensor-enabled cables as a defensive monitoring tool.
