MCS Standard Charging Connector vs. 6 MW Alternative: The Future of Heavy-Duty EV Connectors
The Megawatt Charging System (MCS) is entering commercial service as the standard interface for ultra-fast charging of battery-electric heavy-duty trucks. However, alternative concepts are emerging that could exceed MCS capabilities or eliminate the charging connector altogether.
MCS Standard:

Operating voltages up to 1,250V, currents up to 3,000A
Peak charging power up to 3.75 MW
Manual connection with liquid-cooled cables

Supports up to 4.5 MW at 1,250V

Particularly suited for depot operations, ports, and autonomous vehicles
According to Dr. Sven Klausner, Head of Charging Infrastructure at Fraunhofer IVI: "Work is currently underway at the IEC level on standardising the associated charging interface(s)." A first version of the interface standard is expected in the first half of 2027.
